Stoneware is fired to a high temperature, and this makes it much stronger than earthenware. Earthenware is the typical colourful pottery found in the Mediterannean. The heat of a stoneware firing often burns out bright colours, so bright stoneware is relatively rare, but very attractive as well as functional.
