King of the river, this kingfisher sits on a rock, surveying his world. Amazing detail in Karen's work. 17 cm high.

Karen graduated in 2001 with a BA Hons in Glass & Ceramics. She met her husband Colin at university and they decided to team up to make ceramics. “In a world of mass production where many pieces are made overseas, we wanted to produce British made pieces. Our greatest inspiration is the native wildlife which we see all around us. It became a personal challenge to see just how realistic a bird or animal could be made to look in clay. We take thousands of photos of wildlife to work from. I continuously study the character of a subject to try to capture not only its looks, but also its personality in clay. I consider it a great compliment when people say - That blackbird looks as if it is about to fly away!

About the gallery

Found in historic Hay on Wye, Bluestone Gallery is a new addition to the famous Book Town. We hope to contribute to the creative mix already here so that Hay gets known for its galleries as well as its bookshops. Owned and run by Guy and Ellie Perkins, Bluestone has recently moved from Devizes where it enjoyed a loyal following for twenty years. Time for change of scene, Guy and Ellie are delighted to be part of this vibrant, friendly and thriving community!
