Laurence McGowan and Poppy Dandiya are Retiring.
Two of my favourite makers are retiring. And I mean they are stopping production, not that they are quiet characters - although in fact they both are quiet, unassuming and modest about their talent. Laurence McGowan has made his distinctive majolica decorated stoneware for decades in his Wiltshire studio. Every piece is a harmony of shape and pattern. His brushwork is assured, the glaze decoration of birds and flowers reflecting his love of the natural world.
Poppy Dandiya is something of a legend amongst lovers of unusual handmade jewellery. Fabulous stones set in gold is the hallmark of his work, and some of his more unusual pieces show a breathtaking flamboyance and originality. For many years he has been focusing more on the spiritual side of life, and now he is dedicating his time to setting up a meditation retreat in India.
Both Laurence and Poppy have given real joy to countless people through their hard work and creativity. We will miss them, they are irreplaceable. And we wish them well.
